Call for New Westminster Artists: Upcoming I HeART Main Street Project

Are you an artist located in New Westminster, British Columbia, who is interested in gaining public art experience and building your art practice? The Downtown New West BIA is seeking local emerging artists to participate in a Winter Window Mural public art initiative!

STEPS and the Downtown New West BIA are thrilled to announce this opportunity for emerging artists in New Westminster, British Columbia. The selected artists will work with STEPS and Downtown New West BIA to create designs that they will paint on the windows of the Purpose School. This initiative will help beautify the main streets and further build a sense of community.

About the Opportunity

Client: The Downtown New West BIA (Client) and STEPS Public Art (Project Manager)

Location: 502 Columbia St, New Westminster, BC V3L 1B1 (Purpose Secondary School)

Production Timeline: Production will take place on December 1st – 8th, 2022

Theme: Holiday theme (not exclusive of Christmas)

Applications for this call close on November 24, 2022

About the Project

This project is part of I HeART Main Street winter round of public art projects with Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) and Canadian artists as part of main street recovery. Through pro-bono creative placemaking support and paid opportunities for local artists, STEPS continues to support BIAs in bringing more public art and community engagements to strengthen business-community relationships and foster vibrant public spaces.

Originally formed in 1989, the Downtown New West BIA provides many benefits for its members, enabling more than 650 property owners and businesses to work together on an ongoing basis to assist in the revitalization and promotion of Downtown New West.

With lots of new and exciting additions all the time, Downtown New West is now a vibrant and trendy area with some of the hottest and most unique shops and restaurants calling our streets home.

This production is part of I HeART Main Street, presented in partnership with RBC Royal Bank and the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and funding provided by the Government of Ontario.
