STEPS fosters dynamic, inclusive and resilient communities through public art, community-engaged design and creative placemaking. Our open-concept office along Toronto’s Waterfront has natural light and ample room for physical distancing. We have a flexible working arrangement policy that includes remote working options for staff.


We are seeking an energetic and organized team player with a passion for development, forging new partnerships, and clearly communicating the impact that public art will play in Canada’s community recovery and beyond. They will be integral in maintaining strong relationships with STEPS’ cross-sectional financial contributors who include: government granting agencies, private foundations, corporations and individual donors. Working within Canada’s only national charitable public arts organization, STEPS’ Development Officer will have the opportunity to support creating more vibrant communities and amplifying the work of diverse artists from coast to coast.


This will be a remote-work position and we are accepting applications from across Canada. It is a one year half-time contract position, with the possibility of renewal and wages to commensurate with experience. Working hours are flexible as long as review cycles and firm deadlines are planned to accommodate for smooth workflows with other team members.


  • Identifying and researching a pipeline of corporations, charitable foundations and government granting programs to provide support for STEPS’ programmatic areas, key funding priorities and operations.

  • Writing and preparing proposals and funding applications to local, national and international corporations, charitable foundations and government granting bodies, in collaboration with STEPS’ program teams.

  • Developing and maintaining a calendar of application deadlines and reporting requirements.

  • Contributing to tracking program progress against metrics outlined in funding proposals on a quarterly basis in collaboration with program staff.

  • Preparing progress, impact and stewardship reports for funders.

  • Helping research and build the STEPS donor stewardship program, including defining corporate and sponsor benefits.

  • Ensuring timely stewardship, including the delivery of partnership activation benefits to supporters (visual, verbal and other recognition) in collaboration with programs and engagement staff.

  • Providing professional, high-quality relationship management to sponsors, donors, volunteers, staff and other community contacts.

  • Using STEPS’ CRM (Insightly) and Donor Database (Grant Advance) to track and record funding prospects and actions.

  • Maintaining current marketing and support materials in collaboration with the program’s team.
    Other responsibilities that may arise in support of STEPS’ development activities.

You must be an experienced fundraiser and strong writer with an understanding of Canada’s cultural funding landscape. You have an interest in forging partnerships across industries. You love brainstorming, problem solving and connecting with people. You’re often told by coworkers that they know something will get done if it gets passed to you, and you are not afraid to ask for support or clarification if needed. You have experience jumping in and helping to put processes in place that make an improvement on what has been built while being respectful of the work that has come before. You are highly detail-oriented, and have experience mastering the art of workback schedules against multiple competing deadlines and priorities. You relish making sense of things, anticipating problems and fixing them. You’re good at keeping information confidential. You must be able to work independently, remotely, with minimal supervision and be a collaborative team player.     • Minimum 4 years of progressive experience in a not-for-profit organization, preferably in the arts.
    • Strong project management skills. This includes the ability to organize workflow, delegate tasks, negotiate contracts, manage stakeholder relationships, develop budgets, and reporting.
    • Post-secondary degree/diploma in arts management, visual arts, fine arts, fundraising, English or creative writing.
    • Proven track record in developing and maintaining a portfolio of corporate sponsors, foundations and grants programs.
    • Strong writing and presentation skills, including translating organizational priorities into inspiring, compelling funding opportunities.
    • Experience in identifying, researching, cultivating and soliciting prospects.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team, on projects and team priorities.
    • Experience cultivating and stewarding strong relations across public, private, non-profit and cultural sectors.
    • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to multi-task with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to manage multiple deadlines, work well under tight timelines and ability to respond quickly to changes in priorities.
    • Access to stable and reliable home internet access to perform duties remotely.
    • Experience with donor databases, spreadsheets and presentations.
    • Expressed interest in the mandate of STEPS.
    • Advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
    • Previous successful experience navigating and securing funding requests at the federal and provincial/territorial levels, especially across multiple provincial/territorial jurisdictions (asset).
    • Familiarity with equity frameworks and asset-based approaches (asset).
    • Fluency in French (asset)
