About STEPS Public Art
STEPS Public Art is a national charity and social enterprise that cultivates inclusive public spaces and supports artists to reimagine the places where we live, work, and gather. Whether through large-scale public art, community engagement, or cultural planning, we champion equity-deserving artists and foster collaboration across sectors to spark social change through creativity.
We envision a world where artists and communities co-create public spaces that are vibrant, welcoming, and deeply meaningful.
The Opportunity
We’re seeking up to three (3) new members to join our Board of Directors starting in January 2026, with some onboarding in Fall 2025. This is an exciting time to join STEPS as we deepen our national presence, pilot new funding models, and look ahead to our next strategic planning cycle.
As a STEPS Board member, you will provide thoughtful oversight and bold vision, while also contributing specialized expertise to shape the next chapter of our growth. Our Board blends strategic governance with a limited working board model — meaning your experience and insights won’t just guide the big picture; they’ll be meaningfully applied to support our dynamic and ambitious team.
Who We’re Looking For
While we are considering a myriad of candidates, we are especially excited to connect with candidates who bring one or more of the following:
- Financial acumen, particularly accounting or CFO-level experience, with nonprofit/Board experience as an asset (for Treasurer role succession planning)
- Fundraising, philanthropic, or donor relations experience, particularly in a charitable or cultural context
- Human resources
- Communications
- Cybersecurity
- Passion for and/or lived experience with public art, creative industries, placemaking or community engagement.
In addition, we welcome candidates who are:
- Strategic thinkers with a collaborative mindset
- Deeply aligned with STEPS’ mission and values
- Willing to leverage networks in support of STEPS’ fundraising and visibility goals
- Comfortable communicating via email, phone, and Zoom
Role/Opportunity Details
- Term begins: January 1, 2026
- Time commitment: 4 Board meetings per year (approx. 2 hours each, weekday evenings, virtual), plus the Annual General Meeting (often paired with a learning or social event)
- Additional involvement: Occasional committee participation or advice to staff based on your expertise
- Location: Hybrid. While our administrative office is based in T’karonto (Toronto), we are especially interested in receiving applications from candidates across Canada, especially applicants in regions outside Ontario where STEPS operations are expanding. Board meetings have options for joining virtually, though we encourage those in Southern Ontario to join meetings in person.
Our Values
STEPS is committed to building a Board that reflects the full diversity of the communities we serve across regions, disciplines, and identities. We actively encourage applications from individuals who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, Métis), Black, racialized, disabled, newcomer, and/or LGBTQQIP2SAA+, as well as those from rural and remote communities.
We recognize that systemic barriers exist and we’re happy to provide accommodations throughout the application process. Simply contact us at info@stepspublicart.org with “Board App Accommodations” in the subject line.
