Alice

Alice was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where the surrounding lakes and Atlantic ocean inspired her curiosity with nature and first led her to study Biology at Dalhousie University as an approach to understanding the world. While simultaneously taking drawing classes she subsequently attended NSCAD University where she concentrated on painting, and strengthened her abilities with figurative and observational representation. Alice also attended the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, where she experienced an appreciable amount of art in person. Alice has attended numerous artist in residency programs, and has exhibited her work in Paris, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Halifax and Toronto. She has worked with a gallery in Toronto and has helped install and exhibit at major art fairs in Toronto, New York, Miami and Palm Springs.

Alice has been the recipient of many awards and grants, most recently from Canada Council for the Arts to accomplish a watercolour animation. She included that work in her most recent solo exhibition titled “Constructed Memories” at The Craig Gallery in March, 2021 and also received a grant from the Downtown Halifax Business Commission to compete her first mural located at the Halifax Ferry Terminal, which she completed in May, 2021.

Alice seeks to continuously expand her experience and processes in her visual art. Her paintings consider the impermanence of sensations, feelings and memories held within the body. The gestures explore body language which are intimate, vulnerable and strong. Using the fluid nature of paint and colour to convey the flux of sensations, her paintings are emotional landscapes relating to human experience. Alice currently works from her studio in Halifax.
