About Dwellings by Jonato Dalayoan

Dwellings is a series of functional public artworks inspired by natural forms such as leaves, acorns, trees, rocks and the idea of adapting to one’s surroundings. These pieces serve as a commentary on Jonato’s family’s journey to Canada from the Philippines and their assimilation into Canadian culture. Inspiration to create these pieces came from observing how birds construct their nests, the locations they choose and the materials they select and utilize throughout the process. The colours and materials chosen create a juxtaposition within the surrounding environment, sparking joy and intrigue in the space where the pieces are placed.

“This project made me appreciate how even though things may not go as planned, it doesn’t mean that the outcome won’t be as good or even better.”
