Call for Artists: Durham Region Traffic Control Box Public Art Project

Are you an artist located in Durham Region (or with a strong connection to the Region) interested in gaining public art experience?

Durham Region and STEPS Public Art are seeking sixteen (16) artists to submit digital artwork (including high resolution photographs of your paintings, etc.) to animate traffic control boxes at street corners throughout the Region. This is a paid opportunity to expand your public art experience!

About the Opportunity

Client: Durham Region (Client) and STEPS Public Art (Project Manager)

Location: Durham Region, Ontario

Timeline: Final submission will take place between November 27 – December 6, 2023

Number of Artists Selected: Sixteen (16)

Artist Qualifications: Connections to the local Durham community (this includes Indigenous peoples, current and former residents, and artists with a strong connection to the local community)

Details: 

  • The selected artists will each submit one (1) high resolution digitized artwork at minimum 300dpi that does not pixelate at eight (8) feet tall
  • Artwork will be printed three (3) times in the next five (5) years on traffic boxes (Approximate Dimensions: 60″ H x 30″ W x 17″ D)
  • A Second Rights Agreement will be executed between the Artist and the Region of Durham

Artist Fee: $1,100 per selected artist (inclusive of HST)

Application Deadline: Monday, November 13, 2023 at 11:59 PM ET

  • November 13, 2023: Application Deadline
  • November 14 – November 24, 2023: Artist Selection Period
  • November 27 – December 6, 2023: Agreement executed and final artwork submitted
