ABOUT THIS PROJECT
During his artistic residency with STEPS, Jose Macasinag created Flutter, a projection installation of moving butterflies that represent the interconnectedness of all things. The flutter of the butterflies symbolizes the ripple effect of our actions and the delicate balance between us and our environment.
The installation was displayed at the Sunalta Community Association garden in Calgary with a public celebration and live music. By situating the butterfly imagery in the garden setting, Flutter emphasizes the importance of growing your own food sustainably and planting of local wildflowers, which is the main source of sustenance for pollinators such bees, butterflies, beetles, moths, life forms immediately affected by climate change and human interference.
“This piece is about land, and our connection to it…I’m curious how people can reconnect to nature [in a modern world].”
– Jose Macasinag, Artist-in-residence

PROJECT PARTNERS AND FUNDERS
The CreateSpace Residency is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and TD Bank Group through the TD Ready Commitment. We also acknowledge the support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation with funding provided by the Government of Canada.
STEPS believes that public art should reflect the diverse identities and perspectives of the communities that host it. Artists have a critical role to play in shaping cities, and our Artist Capacity Building Programs are designed to amplify the work of Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour, female, LGBTTQQIAAP and newcomer artists in public spaces.
