About Give Her Flowers
Give Her Flowers is an original acrylic painting by emerging artist Jasmin-Nicole Amoako. As part of the 2022 CreateSpace Public Art Residency, the painting was digitally printed to animate the entrance of Cafe Lara (a local business in Halifax, Nova Scotia).
Give Her Flowers depicts a Black woman receiving flowers to symbolize love, gratitude, and celebration. Inspired by the beauty of flowers and the vibrancy of Black culture in the local community, this public art installation honours the city’s historic Black community in the North End and celebrates the joy of nature.
This public art project was also part of I HeART Main Street, a program by STEPS that supports Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) across Canada interested in creative placemaking through public art.
In partnership with the North End Business Association (NEBA), Give Her Flowers demonstrates the power of public art in animating main streets, engaging community members and visitors through arts and culture, and providing emerging artists with opportunities to bring artistic expression into unique spaces.
“During this residency, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of public art. I’ve always been curious about public art, and this experience has solidified my interest in that direction.”
