Led by Artists Paddy Leung and Meegan Lim, and supported by STEPS Public Art in partnership with the Chinatown BIA, Yue Moon 完滿 brings people together for a luminous experience — an escape from the darkness and cold of winter through collaborative art-making culminating in a public exhibition animating the streets of Toronto’s Chinatown from January through February 2022.
Contribute to the visual motif of this year’s lantern design by celebrating the Year of the Tiger and Lunar New Year Foods through storytelling, drawing and mixed media approaches, leading to the production of a site-specific lantern installation in Toronto.

Year of the Tiger Workshop with Paddy Leung
Split-Pin Tiger
Beginner Level (6 – 99 years old) – For those who are not comfortable with drawing and painting this artistic method is suitable for all levels!
Materials:
- Template: Tiger Body
- Drawing materials (crayons, pencil crayons, markers etc.)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- 1 Black bristol board (size: 8.5 x 11’’)
- 1 Pushpins
- 2 – 5 Split pins (size: ½’’)
Symmetry Tiger Printing
Advanced Level (10 – 99 years old) – For those comfortable with exploring a combination of drawing and painting techniques, these approaches are suitable for you!
Materials:
- Picture of a tiger
- 1 – 3 Construction paper (size: 8.5 x 11”)
- Pencil & eraser
- Paintbrushes
- Tempera/ craft paint: orange, black, white, red
- Paint palette (paper plate)
- Small container of water for your brushes
- Rag cloth
Lunar New Year Foods Workshop with Meegan Lim
Lunar New Year Feast Collage
Beginner Level (6 – 99 years old) – For those who are not comfortable with drawing and painting this artistic method is suitable for all levels!
Materials:
- Printed template
- Scissors
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- Colouring Materials (pens, coloured pencils, marker
Yue Moon Paper Food
Advanced Level (10 – 99 years old) – For those comfortable with exploring a combination of drawing and paper-cut techniques, these approaches are suitable for you!
Materials:
- Coloured construction paper or cardstock (2-3, 8.5 x 5.5” sheets + a 9”x5” sheet for your background)
- Collage materials (optional) (ex. magazines)
- Scissors
- Glue stick or double-sided tape
- Drawing Materials (pens, coloured pencils, markers)

How to Submit Your Artwork
Online workshop participants are responsible for submitting the image file to STEPS. The digital images of workshop participants’ artwork will be produced as part of the final lantern design and public exhibition in Chinatown.
Documentation Tips
- Use whichever camera you have access to — a digital camera, mobile phone, or tablet
- It is recommended you prop or stick your artwork on the wall to create a flat surface to photograph
- When framing the image, please keep some extra space around the artwork (it can be cropped later)
- Natural light is ideal – try photographing your artwork outside on a slightly overcast day. If you cannot access outdoor/natural light, place your artwork in a well-lit area with white light.
- Note: If it is still too dark, you can ask someone to assist you by holding a flashlight to a piece of white paper across from the artwork (the light is meant to bounce back onto your artwork).

About the Artists
Puff Paddy
Lead Artist
PUFF Paddy is a Queer, Asian-Canadian Artist and Arts Educator based in Toronto. Their work focuses mainly on project design for commercial and community events, and installations for public spaces. Their work explores the balance between the ephemeral nature of experience and the joyful permanence of memory. They host workshops and community events intended to get people engaged with the creative process, while sharing their experience of art as a tool for growth and positive change, both personal and collective. Paddy is passionate about bringing the arts to their community and creating community through the arts.
Meegan Lim
Artist Mentee
Meegan Lim is a first-generation Chinese-Malaysian-Canadian illustrator and emerging artist facilitator, based in Brampton and Tkaronto. She is known for her detailed illustrations focusing on food and cultural identity, and the vast stories that exist within those intersections. She strives to create art that is inviting in its aesthetic, thoughtful in its research, and illuminating with its subject matter. In all aspects of her work, she hopes to nurture community growth and healing.
About Yue Moon 完滿
完滿 (Yue Moon), meaning full circle, completion, full moon, is a community-based, multimedia public art program as part of Toronto Chinatown’s Lunar New Year celebrations since 2020. In its third iteration, Yue Moon celebrates the Lunar New Year through arts workshops that culminate in a co-created lantern installation in the heart of the community.
Inspired by the traditional Chinese Palace Lantern design, lanterns are built with each panel showcasing an illustration by a workshop participant. Images of Chinatown’s histories, memories, and intentions for the new year create an immersive, luminous outdoor experience during Lunar New Year celebrations.
